ALBANY, N.Y. (NEXSTAR) — A federal lawsuit filed on Thursday seeks to block the New York State’s Even Year Election Law, a 2023 measure that moves thousands of local elections from traditional odd-year schedules onto even-year ballots. The suit, brought by Republican party committees, county and town governments, and elected officials, argues that the law violates the First Amendment and Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York in Central Islip, asks the court to block the EYEL before the 2026 election cycle. The plaintiffs, including the New York Republican State Committee and officials from Nassau, Suffolk, and Orange Counties, also want the court to let localities opt out.
