TOLEDO, Ohio —
After decades of running toward danger, a retired Toledo Firefighter is getting one final wish as he battles a terminal brain disorder.
For nearly 40 years, Thomas Marciniak sat on the front lines, answering every call for help.
Now, his community is answering one for him as he battles Huntington's disease.
Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Landings of Oregon and the Toledo Fire and Rescue brought Marciniak to the Toledo Firefighters Museum on Monday to be surrounded by his brothers and sisters in red.
"Tom was my first driver when I came on the job," said retired firefighter Dennis Kookoothe, who was part of Marciniak's company. "Tom could get anywhere as fast as you can imagine."
Marciniak's legacy with the department started in 1975.
