The lines for food inside the Covenant Soup Kitchen in Willimantic are seeing new faces.

“We've had people come here that will walk in the door and say, I've never done this before. I don't know how to do this,” longtime volunteer Ray Aramini said.

He said they typically serve 830,000 meals a year, but with high food insecurity and SNAP benefits not being distributed for November, they’re seeing more demand.

They also have a community food pantry, which was full of families looking for assistance.

“As donations are coming in, donations are going out,” Aramini said. “And we live in a very, very kind in supportive community, but it’s really tough to keep up with that.”
