The health unit is warning residents and visitors of a lake south of Espanola to not consume untreated water due to high arsenic levels.
Public Health Sudbury and Districts said it was informed on Oct. 20 that samples collected by the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks from the west end of House Lake, in the Willisville area, had concentrations of arsenic that exceeded the province’s drinking water standards. This location is near the abandoned McMillan Gold Mine.

There was no water-quality issue detected in the east end of the lake, however, and neighbouring Moose Lake, into which water from House Lake flows, also met the drinking water standards.
