Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal is a step closer to securing a second Cy Young.
Perhaps a foregone conclusion, but the lefthander was among three finalists named Monday night for the American League Cy Young Award, honoring the league's top pitcher. Skubal joins Houston Astros ace and Wayne State product Hunter Brown, and Garrett Crochet of the Boston Red Sox.
Cristopher Sanchez (Philadelphia Phillies), Paul Skenes (Pittsburgh Pirates) and Yoshinobu Yamamoto (Los Angeles Dodgers) are the finalists in the National League.
Skubal, 28, was 13-6 this season with 241 strikeouts in 195.1 innings, leading the league in 12 different statistical categories, including ERA (2.21), WAR (6.6), WHIP (0.891), and strikeout-walk ratio (7.3). He was was second in strikeouts per nine innings (11.1).
