NEWARK – Najai Hines grabbed a Saint Peter’s turnover under Seton Hall’s basket, flipped the ball to point guard Budd Clark, then sprinted up court like a freight train, filling the lane just in time to receive a bounce pass from Clark under the rim and finish a textbook fast break with a thunderous jam.
That was a 6-foot-10, 265-pound dude leaving skid marks in his wake.
When the smoke cleared, the freshman center out of Plainfield High School had 12 points, nine boards (four offensive), six blocks and the adoration of just under 4,000 fans who attended the Pirates’ 77-50 season-opening victory at the Prudential Center.
Suffice it to say: A star was born.
