Special intensive revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls will begin from Tuesday in 12 states and union territories. Among these, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, and West Bengal have elections in 2026. Assam also has elections next year. However, the SIR schedule there is not yet decided.
During the SIR in 12 states, the commission's focus is on checking citizenship. According to sources, a thorough review of the electoral rolls will be conducted in Assam, but citizenship will not be checked. Amidst the complex issue of citizenship in the state, the commission is preparing this new model.
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar had stated while announcing the SIR that there are separate provisions regarding citizenship in Assam. The process of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) has
