MONROE, La. (KNOE) - The Ouachita Parish Police Jury voted to reduce the 2023 bond issue that focused on the health units and the construction of an animal shelter.
The police Jury says it is giving back part of the bond after the project costs came 3.7 million short of the expected $5 million.
It was approved in 2023 and would last until 2032, but Police Jury President Shane Smiley says the Police Jury will now stop collecting on the bond once the project is funded.
“So it’s a win-win,” Smiley said. “It’s helping us construct the animal shelter, and it’s also allowing us to roll that millage back to 1.25 mills, thus saving taxpayers money.”
There is no word yet on when the taxes could be dropped.
