IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) - Dozens of people asked the Iowa City Council for protection from ICE during a meeting Monday night.
The request comes after immigration officials arrested Jorge Gonzalez while he was working in late September. The incident was caught on camera at the Bread Garden Market, showing Gonzalez being taken down and placed in handcuffs as two men approached him.
The proposed resolution would establish a “fourth amendment workplace” for city workers, modeled after one in Durham, North Carolina. The measure would prevent immigration enforcement from entering workplaces, starting with those in Iowa City.
