Jamie Melham has become the second woman to win the Melbourne Cup but we’re not celebrating like we did 10 years ago.
And that’s a good thing.
After becoming the first female to win the Caulfield Cup onboard “Half Yours” a fortnight ago, Melham ran the five-year-old gelding to perfection to claim the race of her life.
I still remember the day Michelle Payne won onboard Prince of Penzance ten years ago. In the lead up to the race, I posted on my social media that Michelle was my tip. She was “the only female jockey in this year’s Melbourne Cup and just the fourth to saddle up in the race that stops the nation!” I wrote.
Then she won.
I had many radio and media outlets calling me as I was the only one they knew who had tipped her, she was a $101 chance.
