WARREN — Firefighters in Warren extinguished a small fire Saturday evening at the abandoned former Packard automotive plant.

Fire Chief Ken Nussle said Saturday’s incident was the fifth fire response at the site since Aug. 29, 2025.

The Warren Fire Department responded at 6:20 p.m. to the derelict facility at 650 Griswold Street NE, where flames were reported on the second floor, according to Nussle.

Nussle said the blaze, quickly contained, was caused by squatters burning wooden pallets and other scavenged wood items brought into the building for warmth or cooking.

After each fire, city crews secured the building with plywood barriers, only for them to be torn down or breached, allowing squatters to re-enter.

No injuries were reported in Saturday’s fire, and investigators ruled out a
