A cop behind the wheel of an unmarked police car has argued his driving did not contribute to the death of a teenager who collided with the vehicle, a court has been told.

Benedict Bryant, 47, was behind the wheel when 16-year-old Jai Kalani Wright rode a stolen trail bike and hit the vehicle in Alexandria, in Sydney’s inner city, on February, 9, 2022.

The Indigenous teen suffered critical head injuries and died at Prince Alfred hospital the following day.

Sergeant Bryant has been charged with dangerous driving occasioning death.

The trial, which first began in August, closed at the John Maddison Tower in Sydney’s CBD on Tuesday, with Judge Jane Culver reserving her decision and remarks until later this month.
