In a major political development, prominent northeastern leaders, including Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, have announced the merger of their parties to form a single political entity.
Declaring that “our strength lies in unity” and emphasising the need to give the people of the region one collective voice, the leaders said a committee has been constituted to oversee the merger process.
The committee, convened by National People's Party (NPP) president James Sangma, will work over the next 45 days to finalise the structure of the unified entity.
The announcement of the merger was made by Conrad Sangma, Chairman of Tripura's Tipra Motha Party Pradyot Manikya, People's Party leader Daniel Langthasa and Nagaland Minister Mmhonlumo Kikon at a joint press conference in New Delhi.
