Anthony Albanese and Donald Trump have inked a huge critical minerals deal, giving Australia a real shot at challenging China’s global dominance in the space.
Foreign visits are often brushed off as symbolic fanfare – the usual language around warm, deep, historic ties may mean something to the policy heads scrambling to interpret every gesture or phrase, but does little to impress the taxpayers who stump up the cash.
But from this official visit, almost every Australian state and territory will see a piece of the US$8.5bn ($13.1bn) critical mineral pie.

Home to the country’s biggest miners, Western Australia comes out on top, with the state’s premier, Roger Cook, declaring the deal “a win for Western Australia and a win for Western Australian jobs”.
