Heat pumps and air conditioning may seem like a luxury in a place that's typically been synonymous with rain, drizzle, fog, and snow.
But increasingly, Newfoundland and Labrador is facing heat warnings and long stretches of scorching weather.
"It's not just somebody wanting to be comfortable … when we're looking at legislation around this, it's about public safety," said Emma Power, a senior consultant at Fundamental Inc., a climate consultancy company.
"Sometimes it really could be life and death."
Last week, CBC Investigates reported that Newfoundland and Labrador does not have legislation or policy designated to keep seniors living in long-term care and personal care homes cool.
