UK households are being urged to check the type of wood they are burning this winter or face fines of up to £1,000. As we head deeper into autumn and towards winter, wood-burning stoves and open fires will be lit to keep many homes warm.
The popularity of wood-burning stoves has continued to rise in the UK with 1.9 million homes now having one, despite a Government ban on the sale of house coal and wet wood in 2021. Using wet or unsuitable wood can damage stoves, release harmful pollutants that affect health, harm the environment, and result in fines.
The ban was imposed in an effort to reduce emissions and promote greener alternatives, with Defra also introducing the 'Ready to Burn' certification scheme. The scheme enables consumers to easily identify woods that meet UK stan
