Fremont mayor to replace Nebraska State Treasurer Tom Briese

Gov. Jim Pillen made the announcement during a news conference Monday afternoon that Nebraska State Treasurer Tom Briese is stepping down.

Fremont Mayor Joey Spellerberg is his replacement. Spellerberg said his resignation in his current position will be in effect at midnight Wednesday. He will be sworn in as state treasurer on Thursday.

Briese held the job for two years and served as a state senator for seven years. He says he needs to spend more time at home , noting that he lives 110 miles away from Lincoln.

The changeup comes hours after former State Sen. Julie Slama announced that she would run for the office .
