SULLIVAN, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) - A child that was trapped on the second floor of a burning house was rescued by firefighters on Sunday.

According to Sullivan City Fire Chief Rob Robertson, his department was called out Sunday afternoon to a residence on E. Jackson St.

"When we arrived, a girl was trapped on the second floor. She had her head out of the window," said Robertson.

Robertson noted that someone had put a ladder against the house but it was too short.

"She was able to climb down one of our ladders," Robertson explained.

The house is considered a total loss.

"We believe the fire started in the wood burner area," noted Robertson.

The house next door did have some siding melt but the fire was contained to the one residence.
