Haris Rauf, the Pakistani fast bowler, has been suspended for two One Day Internationals (ODIs) due to misconduct during the Asia Cup 2025. The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced this decision following a series of hearings regarding incidents that occurred during the matches between India and Pakistan. Rauf's suspension means he will miss the ODIs against South Africa scheduled for November 4 and 6, 2025.
The ICC found Rauf guilty of breaching Article 2.21 of its Code of Conduct, which pertains to conduct that brings the game into disrepute. His actions included making gestures that were deemed inappropriate, such as signaling “6-0” and mimicking a plane crash, which many interpreted as mocking Indian fans. Rauf's total of four demerit points within a 24-month period led to this suspension under the ICC's disciplinary framework.
In addition to Rauf, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav was fined 30 percent of his match fee and received two demerit points for refusing to shake hands with the Pakistani players after a match. Suryakumar was also found guilty of breaching the same article. Another Pakistani player, Sahibzada Farhan, received an official warning and one demerit point for his controversial gun celebration after scoring a half-century.
Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah also faced consequences for his actions during the tournament. He accepted an official warning and received one demerit point for imitating Rauf's gestures. However, Arshdeep Singh was cleared of any wrongdoing after a gesture he made went viral.
The ICC confirmed that all players have the right to appeal these decisions, but none have done so as of now. The Asia Cup 2025, co-hosted by India and the UAE, featured intense matches between the two rival nations, further heightened by recent political tensions.
