TORONTO — Midway through the second period Monday night, Philip Tomasino raced down the left wing with linemate Anthony Mantha parallel to him on a 2-on-1.
He was still looking for his first goal and was perhaps eager to show he deserves to stay in the Penguins lineup, so he looked off Mantha and fired. It went well wide.
That play from the 4-3 loss at Scotiabank Arena sums up the season for Tomasino.
Tomasino is still trying to establish himself under new Penguins coach Dan Muse. And with Kevin Hayes close to returning from injury and other youngsters pushing for promotions down in the minors, Tomasino may be running out of time to do so.
If the Penguins needed to open up a roster spot right now, the 24-year-old winger would presumably be on a short list of players they would consider
