All LIV Golf events will be 72 holes starting in 2026, officials announced early Tuesday afternoon.

For its first three seasons, the league played 54-hole tournaments, but now each event will take place over four days. LIV has tinkered with its format several times since its inception, but this is undoubtedly its biggest shake-up.

“As we enter our fourth season as a league, the move to 72 holes marks a pivotal new chapter for LIV Golf that strengthens our league, challenges our elite field of players, and delivers more of the world-class golf, energy, innovation and access that our global audience wants," LIV Golf CEO Scott O'Neil said in a press release.

The move comes as the league continues to make its push to be included in the Official World Golf Ranking. As of now, players don't earn OWGR points at LIV events; they can only do so at the four major championships and events on other circuits, such as the DP World Tour or the Asian Tour. Last year, LIV Golf withdrew its official bid for OWGR points, which was originally sent in June 2022, but resubmitted an application over the summer.

“Everyone wants to see the best players in the world competing against each other, especially in the majors, and for the good of the game, we need a path forward," Bryson DeChambeau said in the league's press release. “By moving to 72 holes, LIV Golf is taking a proactive step to align with the historic format recognized globally. This is a fantastic evolution of the LIV Golf product, showing how our League listens and adapts to create the best possible experience.”

The move to 72 holes won't affect much else in the LIV Golf format, at least for now. The shotgun starts will remain and the scoring systems won't change at regular events. The league did say the format for the season-ending team championship will be announced at a later date, which suggests some more changes could be coming.

On Monday, LIV Golf announced that it would double the number of roster spots up for grabs via its two qualifying pathways: The LIV Golf Promotions Event — which will be held Jan. 8-11 at Black Diamond Ranch in Lecanto, Florida —and the Asian Tour's International Series. This past weekend also marked the start of the league's official offseason, which allows captains to sign, release and trade players based on where they finished in the 2025 standings.

The 2026 LIV Golf season begins Feb. 4 at Riyadh Golf Club in Saudi Arabia.
