JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — The Johnson City Public Library (JCPL) is hosting its annual "Food for Fines" initiative that collects donations for the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee.
According to the JCPL's marketing coordinator Hannah Kiger, for every canned good or non-perishable food item brought in by a library cardholder, two dollars will be forgiven on their book fines.
"We've been doing this program for several years now, and it's always very successful, because people in our community are so generous," Kiger said. "Last year, for instance, we did 740 pounds of food that we were able to donate to Second Harvest because our patrons brought that in."
