JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) - Construction began on the new Towne Acres Elementary School in Johnson City on Tuesday with a celebration marking the groundbreaking.

Many gathered on Tuesday to witness the groundbreaking of the new school that leaders say is set to give students a better opportunity for academic success in the city's education system.

The Superintendent for Johnson City Schools, Erin Slater, said this development will help create more academic growth in Johnson City.

"[It's an] opportunity for the city and for the school system to increase our capacity for our students and to have brand new learning spaces with natural light, flexible learning spaces and teaching to 21st century skills," said Slater.
