Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is looking to acquire a proton beam, a multimillion-dollar investment that would allow the cancer hospital to provide proton therapy to patients for the first time.

Dana-Farber is applying for a Determination of Need from the state’s Department of Public Health for approval to acquire the beam. It would make Dana-Farber one of few hospitals in the region able to offer this kind of treatment. Mass General Hospital is currently the only hospital in New England equipped with a proton beam, although UMass Memorial Health is actively looking to acquire one as well .
