SCRANTON, Pa. — Voters in Scranton today are heading to the polls to decide who should helm the city as its next mayor.
Their choices: Democratic incumbent Mayor Paige Cognetti, who is seeking a second full term in office; Republican Trish Beynon, a construction industry accounting executive and independents Gene Barrett, a former executive director of the Scranton Sewer Authority, and Rik Little, a political newcomer.
The four have made their pitches to voters over the last several weeks on issues of crime and the health of the region’s healthcare system.
They have also dinged Cognetti for seeking the Democratic nomination to potentially unseat first-term Republican Rep. Rob Bresnahan. Should she win a congressional seat, she could not serve the full term as mayor.
