The federal government has tabled its first budget in quite some time, and while spending is way up, the public service is facing significant cuts.
About 16,000 people will be taken out of the public service this year, and a total of 40,000 by 2028-29.
The deficit is about twice as high as forecast in the last economic statement, a little over a year ago – $78B with no appreciable reduction over the next five years.
The government is introducing tax incentives to encourage investment, which in turn yields economic benefits.
It hopes to eliminate the emissions cap, a measure that oil-producing provinces, including Newfoundland and Labrador, have been advocating for.
