The government shutdown is taking a toll on the families of federal employees working without pay.
If the shutdown continues into Wednesday, it will be the longest in American history at 36 days. At least 670,000 federal employees are furloughed and 730,000 are working without pay, according to the Bipartisan Policy Center .

Those numbers include Melissa’s husband, an essential employee at Veterans Affairs. Their family lives in central Connecticut.
“I don’t think that people are thinking about the impact it has on regular middle class families that are going to work,” Melissa said. “People are working day in and day out and going over a month without any pay.”
