Voters in Lawrence, Massachusetts, headed to the polls Tuesday to choose a mayor, city councilors, and school committee members — but the local election took place under a cloud of scrutiny and state oversight .

The Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth's Office sent election observers and Massachusetts State Police to all polling sites in the city following a wave of voter intimidation complaints and allegations of campaign misconduct.

"We have a lot of people on the ground in Lawrence today at every polling place, observing it. We're working in collaboration with Attorney General [Andrea Joy] Campbell to review what's going on," said Secretary of the Commonwealth William Galvin.
