CLEVELAND — The opening round of the Ohio high school football playoffs featured plenty of exciting matchups and more than a few upsets — with some big-name programs going down. From WKYC's 17-county viewing area, 69 teams remained in contention for state championships across seven different divisions, and on Friday, the regional favorites (at least on paper) joined the party.

In a key change to the format this season, the top four seeds in each region received a bye to the second round. Here in Northeast Ohio, this includes some of the most well-known schools in the area, such as St. Edward, Mentor, Archbishop Hoban, Glenville, and defending state champs like Avon and Indian Valley.
