HILO (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hawaii Island police have made an arrest in the case of a fire that burned down an apartment complex in Pepeekeo on Monday night.
Shortly after 10:30 p.m., South Hilo patrol officers and Hawaii County firefighters responded to the structure fire on Kumula Street.
After about two hours, firefighters extinguished the blaze, which was contained to one building.
No injuries were reported.
According to police, a witness said a man was seen leaving the apartment as the fire started.
The suspect was later identified as Kainoa Santos, 33, of Hilo.
Santos was arrested on suspicion of first-degree arson.
He was also arrested and charged for an unrelated outstanding arrest warrant.
Damage to the structure is estimated at more than $1.1 million.
