Sometimes, even the best-laid plans need to be amended.

NFL teams need to call an audible, especially at the trade deadline.

Such was the case with the Patriots. They needed to pivot. They needed to be aggressive, landing reinforcements.

While they are trying to build a program that’s geared toward having sustained success, and holding on to their assets - which is a good plan given the team that was inherited by Mike Vrabel - this was an occasion where they needed to go against script.

Sitting in first-place in the AFC East midway through the season, riding a six-game win streak, with a favorable schedule the rest of the way, it behooved the Patriots to change course.

The AFC landscape is wide open. The Patriots have as good a chance as anyone to get to the Super Bowl.
