Fairfield, Iowa (KYOU) - Carol Carlson has been a poll worker for 35 years, but she’s noticed a shift in recent elections.

“It was an undercurrent of just ill at ease. People trying to pull things on us, calling us names,” said Carlson.

Short tempers seem to increase with the length of lines to vote. During a special runoff election this past September, Carlson said another worker felt so unsafe she called for backup.

“The gal who came in and was helping us called her husband to come in and be there with us because we were feeling threatened,” said Carlson.

She said poll workers are juggling a lot with few bodies and more voters with mobility challenges need help voting from the curb.
