BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - The Birmingham City Council has passed plans to provide relief to SNAP recipients in the city.

Under the approved plan, United Way of Central Alabama would manage $1 million in emergency funding from the city’s reserve fund to support families whose SNAP benefits are in limbo because of the government shutdown.

Officials say around 23,000 families would benefit from the help.

“We know there are a number of children that are affected and that are part of the Birmingham City Schools,” said Birmingham City Council President Wardine Alexander. “So we’re working with Birmingham City Schools to be sure that we identify those households and that we’re able to help the people that really need that assistance.”
