EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — As the battle over SNAP benefits continues, Rhode Island Gov. Dan McKee once again called on President Donald Trump to fully fund the food assistance program.
After federal judges in Rhode Island and Massachusetts issued separate rulings requiring the government to keep funding the program, the Trump administration indicated Monday that SNAP would be partially funded in November.
On Tuesday, the president posted on Truth Social that he would be withholding that funding until Democrats vote to end the government shutdown. But White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt later walked that back, saying the administration would be "fully complying with the court order."
Even if the program is partially funded, it may take weeks to process those benefits.
