(NewsNation) — NewsNation/Decision Desk HQ has called the New Jersey governor race in favor of Mikie Sherrill.

Democrat Mikie Sherrill, a four-term U.S. representative and former Navy helicopter pilot, faced Republican Jack Ciattarelli, a former state Assemblyman who came within three points of winning the governorship in 2021.

Sherrill entered Election Day as the slight favorite to succeed term-limited Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy, but polling showed the race tightening in the final weeks.

Both candidates were evenly matched in campaign funding, making the contest a key test of voter sentiment less than a year into Donald Trump’s second term.
