New South Wales Police Minister Yasmin Catley and the state's new Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon have travelled to a regional community grappling with a crime crisis following a plea from the township's mayor.
Locals in the town of Walgett have been left scared in their own homes amid a spate of crime, including one incident where a mother was allegedly held at knife point by a teenager in front of her children at a community pool.
SkyNews.com.au understands Ms Catley and Commissioner Laydon were due to meet with Walgett Shire councillors at 11.30am on Wednesday.
It is understood the request came from Ms Catley's office on Tuesday.
Commissioner Laydon - who officially stepped into his role as Commissioner in October - has separately been travelling around regional NSW in recent weeks
