Bilaspur: At least eight people were killed and several others injured after a passenger train collided with a goods train near Bilaspur railway station in Chhattisgarh on Tuesday evening. The tragic incident occurred around 4 pm when a MEMU (mainline electric multiple unit) passenger train travelling from Gevra in Korba district to Bilaspur rammed into a stationary goods train between Gatora and Bilaspur stations.

A preliminary investigation suggests that the accident may have occurred due to “signal passed at danger” (SPAD) — a situation where a train driver moves past a red signal. Top sources said the section where the accident occurred uses an automatic signalling system, and the loco pilot may have missed the danger signal.
