GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - The results are in, and Gainesville voters approved a referendum returning control of Gainesville Regional Utilities to the city and away from the governor-appointed GRU Authority board.
The Local Public Utilities charter amendment passed with 75 percent of the vote. Nearly 15,500 ballots were cast in the election, 19 percent of the electorate.
People living outside Gainesville city limits couldn’t cast a ballot in the election, a point of frustration for many GRU customers in the county.
Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill in June 2023 creating the authority board. In September of that same year, DeSantis appointed the first board members.
