LUBBOCK, Texas -- A Frenship FFA student was named the National Proficiency Award winner in Specialty Crop Production.

Gunner Claybrook, a senior at Frenship High School, competed in Indianapolis at the 98th Annual National FFA Convention. More than 73,000 students from across the nation gathered in Indiana this year to compete.

With no experience with agriculture prior, Claybook said he was nervous about joining FFA after a football injury that retired his athletic career. However, the FFA chapter "welcomed him with open arms" and launched his passion for leadership, public speaking and agriculture.

"I remember the day that he [Claybrook] got put into my freshman class," Frenship FFA teacher Matthew Huston recalled. "We were able to find a skill that he was really good at."
