LUBBOCK, Texas -- As federal food assistance remains in limbo amid the ongoing government shutdown, one South Lubbock 8-year-old is finding a way to help families in his own neighborhood.
Remy Kraeutler and his mom, Anna, have organized a community bake sale and food drive to support local families facing food insecurity. All proceeds and donations will go toward groceries for families in Remy’s school district who rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
“When we heard that SNAP benefits were kind of in limbo, we knew we were in a place of privilege,” said Anna Kraeutler. “I was always taught that if you’re able to help, you should and that’s something I want to instill in my children.”
Anna said she and her two sons talked about what food insecurity means and why
