ASHEBORO, N.C. — For the first time in 16 years, Asheboro has elected a new mayor.

In a battle between two city councilmen, Joey Trogdon defeated Eddie Burks in Tuesday's election, claiming 58.09% of the vote. He succeeds David Smith, who has served as Zoo City’s mayor since 2009 but chose not to seek reelection.

Trogdon has served on Asheboro's City Council since 2023.

"I'm tired, but I'm very thankful and appreciative," Trogdon told WFMY News 2 on Tuesday. "I got a lot of friends and support in Asheboro. You can't do this by yourself."

Trogdon said Tuesday that his first order of business will be improving the city's infrastructure.
