CHICAGO (WLS) -- Two people are dead and another is injured after a head-on crash on the city's South Side on Tuesday afternoon, Chicago police said.

Police said the crash happened in the Wrightwood neighborhood's 2800-block of West 87th Street just before 3 p.m.

A 73-year-old man was driving an SUV eastbound on 87th Street when he tried to turn left onto northbound California Avenue, police said. The SUV struck a sedan head-on.

Police said the SUV's driver and his 76-year-old passenger were taken to Christ Hospital, where they were pronounced dead. Their identities were not immediately released.

The sedan's driver, a 21-year-old man, suffered a leg injury, police said. He was taken to the same hospital in fair condition.
