A Hidalgo County family is without a home following a fire on Friday morning.

Investigators believe an air conditioning unit sparked the fire.

The Rodriguez family wasn't able to save anything, but they said all that matters to them is that they're safe and together.

Charred wood, melted metal and the smell of smoke still lingers in the air. All reminders of just how fast this Val Verde Vista Home went up in flames.

"In less than three minutes, the house didn't exist anymore," Norma Montes said.

The home was already engulfed when fire crews showed up. The cause is believed to be from a mini-split AC unit in the room of 15-year-old Miguel Rodriguez.

"I was just getting ready in the kitchen. I was just chilling on my phone and then the air gets really hard to breathe," Miguel said.
