Purdue opened its season in grand style Tuesday thanks in large part to Fletcher Loyer, who piled up a career-high 30 points on 7-for-10 shooting from 3-point distance to help the No. 1 Boilermakers pull away after a shaky start.

Trey Kaufman-Renn was a surprise scratch for the Boilermakers after suffering a minor hip injury in practice Monday. With the preseason All-American forward missing and the Boilers languishing to a certain extent in the first 10 minutes, it was the other two members of the senior core that got the team in gear.
