CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — It wasn't that much of a race.

Incumbent Vi Lyles has won her fifth term over Republican Terrie Donovan and Libertarian Rob Yates.

Lyles won the primary election with more than 70 percent of the vote, despite criticism of her leadership following the deadly stabbing of Iryna Zarutska on the Charlotte light rail in August. Following the stabbing, many lawmakers, including South Carolina Congressman Ralph Norman, were calling for her resignation. Norman also warned South Carolinians about traveling to Charlotte, saying the city was unsafe under her leadership.

Local Democrats were at a watch party in Dilworth, anticipating a comfortable win for Lyles.
