COLUMBUS, Ohio — It is projected that Mifflin Township voters struck down a 5.57-mill levy Tuesday, potentially resulting in the closure of their police department.

One hundred forty five people voted against the levy, while 120 people voted to support it, according to preliminary results from the Franklin County Board of Elections.

The proposed levy would have generated an estimated $400,000 annually, according to township officials. That amounts to about $195 per year for every $100,000 of a home's assessed value. The police department is funded entirely through levies and does not receive money from the township’s general fund.

Voters rejected a similar measure in May that sought to secure funding and maintain 24/7 police coverage.
