VIRGINIA, USA — Jay Jones has unseated incumbent Jason Miyares and will be Virginia's new attorney general, bringing an end to what was one of the most contentious races this election season.
The unofficial results from the Virginia Department of Elections show Jones ahead of Miyares by a margin of 53% to 48%.
Miyares congratulated Jones on his victory on stage around 10 p.m. Tuesday, just as The Associated Press called the race for Jones.
A Norfolk native, Jones is a former Assistant Attorney General in Washington, D.C. and a former lawmaker in the Virginia House of Delegates. He ran for attorney general in 2021, but lost the Democratic primary to Mark Herring, who ended up losing to Miyares.
