HMRC is in the process of contacting tens of thousands of people to whom they owe cash. One person reached out to the tax authority via social media after receiving an unexpected letter. The correspondence from HMRC stated that "we owe you money" from a tax credit claim, for the 2011/2012 tax year.

The sum owed to this particular person was over £430. They asked HMRC to confirm the letter was authentic. Posting on November 3, the person queried: "Do you know if you're sending out tax credit refunds that go back to 2011? Had this in the post today- it's the real phone number but seems odd that it's from years ago."

In response, HMRC confirmed: "Yes, we are. As tax credits have ceased, we're going through all the old records to finalise everything before all the tax credit systems are shut
