HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is dispatching more than 200,000 letters to people who will be affected by changes to the tax system next year. Just five months remain until sole traders and landlords with qualifying income exceeding £50,000 must adopt Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax.
The rollout on April 6, 2026 represents a substantial and ultimately time-saving shift in how these people will need to maintain digital records and submit their income to HMRC. Whilst five months may seem distant, HMRC is encouraging customers to prepare now and participate in the testing programme.
HMRC said: "It will give you the chance to get comfortable with the new system before it becomes mandatory and access to our dedicated support team - essentially a safety net while you learn the ropes."
