SCOTT COUNTY, Tenn. (WATE) — Officials with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) held a public meeting in Oneida Tuesday night.
The purpose of the meeting was to answer questions from the community regarding Volunteer Landfill's request for a leachate evaporator. TDEC defines leachate as any water that percolates through waste mass. In simple terms, it is contaminated liquid that forms when water passes through waste in a landfill.
The evaporation process then removes the water, turning it into vapor. Solid waste constituents are left behind which are then placed back into the landfill.
For several months, a group of residents called "Cumberland Clear" has been fighting against a proposed landfill referred to as "Roberta II." This landfill would be built next
